Bison, Bison bison, 5'-61/2' at the shoulder, 7500-2000 pounds. Despite their bulk, Bison are quite nimble and fast animals, attaining speeds of up to 30mph. After a boisterous breeding season in mid-summer, a single calf is born in May. Both sexes grow permanent horns which, along with their prominent hump, begin developing at 2 months of age. Bison graze on grasses, forms, sedges and other vegetation and formerly ranged across most of the US. Most wild bison are now confined to national parks and other preserves. They are the largest territorial mammal in North America.
