The Aspen Tree or Quaking Aspen is the most widely distributed tree in North America. Its range covers over 3,000 miles from the Arctic tundra to the mountains of Mexico. Aspens can withstand temperatures from 70 degrees below zero to 100 degrees above zero. Aspen groves, such as this one, are usually made up of genetically identical trees, which is the reason they often turn the same color at the same time in the fall. Aspen trees are excellent sources of food and shelter for wildlife such as deer, moose, beaver, elk and many birds. Over 55 species of mammals and 136 species of birds utilize Aspen trees during some part of the year. Under ideal conditions, an Aspen tree may live 200 years.
