Western Tanager, Piranga ludovicana, 61/4"-71/2" long. The Western Tanager. one of the most colorful birds of the Rocky Mountains, can be found at elevations up to 10,000 feet. It spends its summers in mature forests of fir, pine, spruce and aspen. The Tanager builds its nest on the outer limbs of mountain trees. The female lays three pale blue eggs which are incubated for 13 days. The males help in feeding the chicks. In fall they migrate to their wintering grounds in Mexico and Central America.
