A cow bison stares out from beneath a blanket of new snow in Yellowstone National Park's Lamar Valley.  "The previous evening we had watched this herd of bison as they prepared to settle in for the night during an extremely heavy snowfall.  Overnight and into the next morning the snow, combined with forty mile per hour winds, made for blizzard like conditions.  As dawn approached we found most of the her about 40 to 50 yards away, still bedded down and huddled together facing into the wind".  (Unlike most animals, bison prefer to face into the wind during storms, as their head, chest and shoulders posses the thickest fur).  "We photographed directly over the top of this bison fo over half an hour before we realized that the snowbank in from of us was actually alive.  Until she turned and looked over her shoulder, cracking the snow that surrounded her body, she had appeared only as a snowdrift with a protruding stick.  I think that the bison and I were both equally surprised to see each other at that moment.  I often find that the worse the weather conditions happen to be, the greater the opportunity for interesting and unique photographs".
