Pika, Ochotona princeps, 63/8"-71/2" long, about 4 ounces.  Found primarily in the mountainous areas of American west, Pikas are small, active and highly vocal animals and chirp sharply when they sense danger.  They live in colonies in the high altitude interface between alpine meadows and rocky talus.  Pikas do not hibernate and survive by gathering a wide variety of grasses, flowers and sedges, which they spread in the sun to dry.  The resulting hay is then cached in dens within the rock piles and eaten during the long, snowy winter.  This behavior benefits the habitat by increasing plant diversity in the area around Pika colonies.  Other names for the Pika include 'Cony', 'Whistling Hare' and 'Rock Rabbit'.
