The Gray Wolf, Canis lupus, 26'-36" at the shoulder, 57-130 pounds. Most wolves are grizzled gray, but wolves show a range of color from white to black. Well adapted to winter, their thick coat protects them from. the coldest temperatures. They gain an advantage over their prey when crusty snow hampers the movement of deer, elk and moose while allowing the wolf pack to move easily. Wolf families form of 2-15 members and pack success is dependent on the communal hunt. Packs inhabit a large territory, up to 260 square miles, and will aggressively defend it against individuals and other packs.
