Historically found throughout much of North America, Grizzly Bears  have more recently been eliminated by hunters and loss of habitat from all but the northern most parts of North America.  They are 6'-8'long, 4'-5' tall and 375-100 pounds.  Generally ,Grizzlies are solitary and can vary in color.  They are identified by their dished faces, humped backs and long claws.  During the summer months, Grizzlies consume large amounts of food, up to 26 to 35 pounds a day of vegetation, tubers, Whitebark pine nuts, insects and grubs, small rodents and carrion.  Then they enter a winter sleep, a period of torpor rather than true hibernation, in a den.  Young, small(12 to 20 ounces), nearly naked and helpless, are born during this time and stay with the mother for 2to3 years.  Breeding usually occurs every two years.
