A red fox vixen gets an affectionate greeting from one of her five kits. At five to six weeks old, the pups can now be left at the den on their own while both parents hunt for food nearby. Foxes are very opportunistic hunters and have a varied diet consisting of insects, rabbits, mice, voles, pocket gophers, ground squirrels, birds, eggs, amphibians, reptiles. invertebrates, earthworms, crayfish, mollusks, fish, seeds, berries and other fruits. The female will also nurse her young several times a day until they are weaned at eight to ten weeks. Come Autumn, when they are fully grown, the kits will disperse to find their own territories.
