Great Blue Heron, Ardea herodias, 38"-54" tall, 66"-79" wingspan. A slow wingbeat and huge wingspan grace the Great Blue Heron, the largest and most wide-spread of the North American herons. These birds are found across the U.S., Canada and Mexico, where they nest in trees near waterways, usually forming colonies. Using their long, pointed beaks they hunt along the shores of ponds, rivers, marshes and swamps for fish,, frogs, snakes and insects. Most herons migrate south for the winter, but some will remain in the north if adequate open water exists. At this time a high percentage of their diet may consist of voles and other rodents. Here, a Great Blue Heron takes to the air attired ia all its breeding finery.
