A female great gray owl flies low over a mountain meadow on the way back to her three chicks waiting in the nest. Its piercing gaze is not soon forgotten by those fortunate to encounter one. North America's largest owl, standing some thirty-three inches tall and with a wingspan of seven feet, it is one of the few that occasionally hunts during daylight. Although sightings are rare, mixed aspen and evergreen forests and the edge of meadows are excellent places to search for them at dawn and dusk.
