Once ranging throughout North America, the Grizzly is now found in Alaska, Canada, and few isolated wilderness areas in the United States. It is considered endangered in the lower 48 states due to a history of hunting and loss of habitat to development. They are6'-8' long, 4'-5' tall and 375-1000 pounds. Generally, Grizzlies are solitary and can vary in color. They are identified by their dished faces, humped backs and long claws. During the months of summer, Grizzlies consume large amounts of food, up to 26 to 35 pounds a day of vegetation, tubers, Whitebark pine nuts, insects and grubs, small rodents, carrion and especially salmon. Where there are salmon runs, there are grizzly bears fishing. After a large meal it is time for a rest.
