A male mountain bluebird in perfect breeding plumage finds a stable perch on a willow branch in Grand Teton National Park. Always one of the first species to return to the mountains of western Wyoming each spring, bluebirds usually arrive in the Jackson Hole Valley by mid-March. Primarily insect eaters, their arrival perfectly coincides with a hatch of tiny flies that come out on the snow as the days get longer and daytime temperatures move above freezing. Their brilliant blue is one of the first signs that spring is on its way.
