A pair of soaking wet Great Horned Owlets sit out a rain shower at their nest in the trunk of a cottonwood tree. Born in early spring and now several weeks old, they will leave the nest at around 5 weeks of age but won't be able to fly until they are 9 to 10 weeks old. They will be fed and watched by both parents until the are several months old and have learned to hunt on their own.
Great Horned Owls are found throughout most of NorthAmerica. They are mainly nocturnal (active at night) and feed on a verity of prey species including rabbits, rats, mice, ground squirrels, opossums, other birds ,snakes, frogs, insects, occasionally fish and even skunks. Their hooting can often be heated at night in late winter at the onset of their mating season.
